Electricity prices likely to increase

The electricity prices are likely to increase for the entire country, including Karachi, the private media channel reported on Tuesday. According to the report, the electricity will increase by 27 Paisa.

The private media channel also reported that the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) requested to increase the electricity prices by 27 Paisa to balance March’s fuel adjustment. However, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has completed the hearing today at the request of CPPA.

The report also confirmed that electricity prices will increase across the country and will be applicable to K-Electric employees.

The authorities also confirmed that the reports regarding the basic tariffs are baseless, and no decision regarding this matter is expected before 2027.

In March, the average cost of electricity remained around Rs. 8.26 per unit, while the reference cost was Rs. 7.99 per unit. Hydropower accounted for approximately 18% of electricity generation, while a decline was also observed in production from RLNG.

Officials stated that if this load shedding is not carried out, circular debt could increase by Rs. 400 to 500 billion.

On the other hand, the Pakistani authorities urged citizens to use electricity to avoid the severe electricity crisis in the country.

Several reports confirmed in the last few days that there is a loadshedding for extended hours in different parts of the country, including Karachi and other big cities of the country.
