Power breakdown at Dhabeji station threatens Karachi water supply

Fear of water supply in Karachi

A sudden power breakdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station on Monday disrupted Karachi’s water supply system and prompted immediate emergency response from authorities.

Officials said a technical fault in the electricity supply provided by K-Electric caused the breakdown at the facility. The incident affected the second phase of the Dhabeji pumping station, which serves as one of the main water sources for Karachi.

According to a spokesperson of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KW&SC), the sudden power failure led to a pressure fluctuation in the system. The fluctuation damaged two PRCC lines and one MS pipeline, resulting in operational instability at the pumping station.

Officials warned that the disruption could affect the regular water supply to parts of the city if restoration work is delayed. However, they confirmed that technical teams acted quickly after receiving reports of the breakdown.

Senior engineers and maintenance staff immediately reached the site to assess the damage and begin repair work. The authorities launched emergency restoration efforts to stabilise the system and restore normal pumping operations as soon as possible.

KW&SC officials said they are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with electricity providers to identify the exact cause of the fault and prevent similar incidents in the future. They added that efforts are underway on a priority basis to ensure minimum disruption for citizens.

Water supply from the Dhabeji pumping station is considered vital for Karachi, as it supplies a significant portion of the city’s daily water needs. Any interruption in its operations can directly impact millions of residents across multiple districts.

Officials assured that they are working around the clock to restore full functionality and normalise water distribution at the earliest. They also urged citizens to use water carefully until the system is fully restored.
