Govt announces May 1 holiday: how many days off in Pakistan

May 1 has been officially announced as a public holiday in Pakistan, with employees getting a three-day long weekly holiday as it falls on a Friday.

People across the country will be able to enjoy a three-day holiday starting tomorrow, Friday, May 1, which is Labour Day. Then they will be able to enjoy the usual weekly holiday, Saturday and Sunday.

According to the details, the Punjab and Sindh governments have officially declared a public holiday across the provinces on May 1 on the occasion of “May Day”.

Regular notifications have been issued by the relevant provincial departments in this regard as well.

As per the notification issued, all government and private offices, educational institutions, autonomous bodies and local councils will remain closed in all major and small cities of Punjab and Sindh. These include Lahore and Karachi, on Friday, May 1.

The federal government is also expected to announce a public holiday across the country. While the State Bank of Pakistan has already confirmed the closure of all banks on that day.

This year, May 1 will be a long three-day weekly holiday for government and private sector employees.

After the public holiday on Friday, offices and educational institutions will now reopen on Monday due to the holidays on Saturday and Sunday.

It should be noted that May Day is celebrated every year to pay tribute to the hard work of workers and their key role in economic and social development.

On this day, rallies and seminars are held across the country to highlight the rights of workers and their welfare.

Public holidays in Pakistan 2026: SBP

Before this, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced on Tuesday that all banks in the country will remain closed on May 1 to observe Labour Day.

In a short notice, the central bank said that the Government of Pakistan has declared May 1 as a public holiday. The announcement was also shared on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

It added that the State Bank of Pakistan will also remain closed on Friday, May 1, 2026, because of Labour Day.
