SBP announces holiday on May 1

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced on Tuesday that all banks in the country will remain closed on May 1 to observe Labour Day.

In a short notice, the central bank said that the Government of Pakistan has declared May 1 as a public holiday. The announcement was also shared on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

It added that the State Bank of Pakistan will also remain closed on Friday, May 1, 2026, because of Labour Day.

Labour Day is also called May Day. The day is celebrated around the world on May 1 every year. It is an occasion to show respect for workers and support their rights.

The day also recognises the hard work and contributions of labourers everywhere. It tries to promote better job security and protect workers from unfair treatment.

Will there be public holiday on May 1

The federal government of Pakistan previously announced that there would be a public holiday across the country on Friday, May 1, for International Workers’ Day. A notification was also issued confirming the holiday.

According to it, all government and private offices, schools, colleges, and business centres will be closed on May 1. This is to honour and appreciate the efforts of workers and the working class in the country.

The holiday falls on a Friday, so people will get a three-day break, as Saturday and Sunday are already regular holidays.

Labour Day is celebrated every year in Pakistan to show support for workers and to highlight their rights and well-being.

In view of these Labour Day holidays in Pakistan, the Punjab government has also directed that salaries for government employees should be disbursed on April 30.

According to the notification issued by the Punjab Finance Department, all departments have to make sure of the of timely payment. The salaries need to be paid before the holidays begin.
