Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has been fined 25% of his match fee and given one demerit point for using a vape in the dressing room during the match against Punjab Kings in New Chandigarh, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said.
The BCCI stated that this action violated Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which relates to behaviour that brings the game into disrepute.
Riyan Parag admitted his mistake and accepted the punishment imposed by the match referee. The board also clarified that further investigation into the matter is ongoing, and stricter action against the team, officials, and players is being considered to uphold the reputation of the league.
The incident occurred during the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), when Parag was reportedly seen using a vape inside the dressing room while his team successfully chased down a target of 223 runs, handing Punjab Kings their first defeat of the season.
According to an IPL media advisory, Parag was found guilty of violating Article 2.21 of the Code of Conduct, which pertains to behaviour that “brings the game into disrepute.” He admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Amit Sharma.
The advisory also stated that the BCCI is considering further action against the franchise, its officials, and the player involved to uphold the league’s reputation. The Rajasthan Royals are scheduled to face the Delhi Capitals in their next match in Jaipur on Friday.
