Sri Lanka has moved to overhaul its cricket administration, with the government appointing a nine-member ‘Transformation Committee ‘ to take charge of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) after dismissing all existing officials.

The high-powered body features cricketing greats such as Kumar Sangakkara, Roshan Mahanama, and Sidath Wettimuny, alongside key figures from the corporate and legal sectors, signalling a broad-based effort to reform the sport’s governance structure.

Former Member of Parliament and businessman Erin Wickramaratne has been appointed as the head of the committee. He has stepped away from his political affiliations to take on this role. The committee’s main objective is to introduce major reforms in the structure of Sri Lanka Cricket and implement a new constitution aimed at eliminating alleged corruption, mismanagement, and nepotism within the board.

According to Chairman Erin Wickramaratne, his top priorities include a complete overhaul of the cricket governance framework and restoring the national team’s performance to world-class standards. He assured that the committee will fully comply with the rules of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to avoid any allegations of political interference.

It is worth noting that public pressure had been mounting on former SLC President Shammi Silva following the national team’s disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup held in Sri Lanka in February and March, which led the government to take this drastic step. Avanti Kolombage is the only female member of the committee, and two distinguished lawyers have also been included to ensure transparency in legal and constitutional reforms.
