Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the design of the Gujranwala Mass Transit System, instructing the relevant authorities to ensure thorough connectivity throughout the city via an integrated feeder bus network.
During a meeting held on Saturday to assess the project, the Chief Minister received a detailed briefing on the proposed plan.
She directed that all regions of Gujranwala be connected to the metro train service through feeder buses to enable seamless travel for passengers.
To improve traffic flow and urban mobility, the decision was made to construct two tunnel sections within the project, and in-principle approval was granted for 17 to 19 kilometers of the transit line to be constructed underground.
The meeting also approved the installation of solar systems at all stations and depots, indicating a move towards sustainable and energy-efficient infrastructure.
As per the briefing, the mass transit system is expected to accommodate up to 2.6 million passengers. The 31.5-kilometer route will stretch from Gakhar to Aimanabad, with a completion target set for 12 months.
A total of 24 stations, including two underground stations, will be built along the corridor. Depots are planned at Gharjakh, Chand Da Qila, and Gondlanwala to enhance operational efficiency.
Furthermore, a 62-kilometer drainage system will be constructed along both sides of the transit corridor, and a dedicated command and control centre will be established to oversee and manage operations.
The Chief Minister stated that the Gujranwala Mass Transit System would revolutionise the city’s transport culture and provide residents with a modern, efficient commuting option.
