Punjab govt establishes mediation committees for land disputes

The Punjab government has set up mediation committees to resolve land disputes, as announced by the Board of Revenue Punjab.

A notification has been issued by the department regarding this matter, which has been in effect since April 30.

According to the notification, land disputes in Punjab will now be settled by a mediation committee led by an Assistant Commissioner before escalating to the courts.

Each committee, consisting of five members, will include the Assistant Commissioner, Assistant Collector, local revenue officials (Girdawar and Numberdar), along with three members appointed by the parties involved in the dispute.

The committees have been empowered under Section 151(2) of the Punjab Land Revenue Act 1967.

Their responsibility is to resolve outstanding cases within a 30-day timeframe, thereby ensuring prompt justice. Additionally, a monitoring cell has been established within the Board of Revenue Punjab to supervise their activities.
