The Punjab Police are actively pursuing a strict crackdown on electricity theft throughout the province, having arrested 17,954 individuals accused of this crime so far this year.
As reported by a spokesperson for the Punjab Police, a total of 24,356 cases of electricity theft have been documented across Punjab, including in Lahore, as part of the ongoing initiative.
The spokesperson further indicated that challans have been finalised in 15,698 cases, with courts imposing penalties and fines on 2,448 individuals found guilty of electricity theft.
In Lahore specifically, the police have recorded 5,757 cases of electricity theft and have arrested 6,484 individuals this year.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab, Abdul Kareem, has instructed all field units to maintain strict actions against electricity thieves who are inflicting financial losses on the national treasury.
He mentioned that operations targeting those involved in electricity theft should be put first across Punjab.
Electricity may get cheaper in Pakistan soon
Earlier, the Federal Minister of Energy, Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, has announced that electricity will be cheaper in Pakistan.
While speaking virtually through a video link in the workshop conducted at LUMS University, Lahore, the Minister of Energy said that the electricity prices will soon be very low in Pakistan.
The consumers can even store energy in the batteries and will be able to use it at night, he added.
He stated that the new framework is underway to improve efficiency in the energy sector and to reduce the high rates of electricity.
