In a major development ahead of the Federal Budget 2026–27, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has reportedly proposed a significant increase in financial assistance under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), according to media reports.
The proposal is aimed at strengthening social protection measures and providing greater relief to low-income families across the country. Reports suggest that the IMF has recommended raising the quarterly payment under BISP from Rs 14,500 to Rs 20,000.
It further stated that discussions are currently underway between the IMF mission and BISP officials, during which various aspects of the social protection system and financial assistance programs are being reviewed.
During these negotiations, officials provided the IMF delegation with a detailed briefing on the data of families registered under the sponsorship program, quarterly disbursements, and requirements for the upcoming financial year.
According to sources, the IMF has emphasised that the BISP stipend should be increased in the next fiscal year to provide greater relief to low-income families affected by inflation.
Reports also indicate that the IMF mission is scheduled to hold further important meetings with BISP and Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials, where budget targets and social protection plans will be discussed.
Experts believe that if this proposal is approved, millions of deserving families could receive significant relief from financial hardship.
