From glory to struggle: Pakistan test cricket faces historic decline

Pakistan cricket has reached one of the darkest phases in its Test history, as the national side now stands on the verge of an unwanted record where total defeats could equal total victories in Test cricket.

Once regarded as a dominant force in red-ball cricket, Pakistan built a glorious legacy by winning Test series across the world since 1952. From defeating England in England to conquering India in India, Pakistan’s rise in Test cricket was marked by fearless performances and legendary players.

However, the team is now facing serious turmoil, with years of inconsistent performances pushing Pakistan Test cricket to a historic low.

This was the same team that stopped the mighty West Indies from dominating at home during their golden era. Pakistan defeated England in England and India in India, while also winning matches in many other countries. Even in Australia, where umpiring was often criticised, Pakistan managed to draw several tough series.

Pakistan regarded as number one Test team during 1980s, 1990s

According to the rankings compiled by the International Cricket Council, Pakistan was regarded as the number one Test team during the 1980s and 1990s.

The team has produced many legendary fast bowlers and famous batters whose names are still remembered with great respect around the world.

Today, however, Pakistan’s Test cricket has declined to a stage where the number of defeats is dangerously close to surpassing the number of victories.

The Pakistan-Bangladesh Test match played in Sylhet was the 469th Test match in Pakistan’s history. Pakistan suffered its 151st defeat in that match, while 166 Tests ended in draws, and Pakistan has won 152 Tests.

This means that if Pakistan loses its next Test match without securing a victory first, the number of defeats and victories in its Test history will become equal.
