Karachi authorities launch crackdown on illegal cattle markets

Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has given instructions for a crackdown on illegal cattle markets citywide, which have been cropping up in every corner of Karachi.

Enforcement operations have been launched by the local authorities before Eid-ul-Azha to curb the illegal animal trading centres.

Dozens of people have been arrested, and cases have been registered against the people operating the illegal sale points, officials said.

An illegal cattle market was shut down, and one man was arrested in Shah Faisal Colony.

Deputy Commissioner Taha Saleem conducted a raid in Central district on an illegal cattle market at Piyala Hotel and cleared it.

The traders have been detained, and police officers have been deployed at the site to stop animal trading from resuming, which he said had been done several times, he added.

Deputy Commissioner Masood Bhutto confirmed that several illegal markets were shut in Korangi Number 5, Makhdoom Society A-3, Nasir Jump, New Town police station area, 16000 Road Chakra Goth, Punjab Ground Shah Faisal, and Reta Plot.

Deputy Commissioner Ameer Afzal Awaisi said in Keamari that illegal cattle markets were cleared at Mauripur Truck Stand, owing to traffic jams on the roads towards Hawkes Bay.

These unauthorised markets were generating sanitation problems and engendering heavy traffic, Commissioner Naqvi said, adding that the District Administrations would continue to take strict action with the assistance of police to ensure public convenience.

Authorities reiterated that all illegal cattle markets will be strictly banned and will continue to be monitored in all districts leading up to the Eid-ul-Azha.
