PM Shehbaz forms special committee for Budget 2026–27 preparations

In a major development ahead of the Budget 2026–27, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a seven-member special committee headed by the Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb to oversee key budgetary matters, according to media reports.

The committee will review all aspects related to the upcoming budget and submit its final recommendations to the Prime Minister. It includes the Minister for Economic Affairs, the Minister for Planning, and the Minister for Law, among others.

Chief Technical Advisor Musharraf Rasool and the Additional Secretary Finance have also been included. After the Prime Minister’s approval, the formal Terms of Reference (TORs) of the committee have been issued.

The committee will review the performance and financial requirements of the Ministries of Commerce, Power, Privatisation, and IT. The Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the new fiscal year will be proposed on the basis of the performance of these ministries.

The Budget Committee will also review pending legal cases related to the Power Division in international courts and will propose a costing strategy to pursue strong cases in these courts.

The TORs also include a review of financial support for green startups through the climate support levy. Ministries will be required to submit detailed reports on the implementation of government decisions regarding rightsizing.
