Germany has enacted a new immigration law to recruit skilled IT workers and other qualified foreign nationals from abroad.

The new rules offer various options for residency and employment, making it more attractive for foreign tech experts to work and live in the country.

The changes are aimed at filling vacancies in the job market and boosting the digital economy in Germany. The salary requirements for the programme are all set from January 2026.

The Residence Permit for Skilled Workers is one of the primary ones that can be obtained by professionals who have a recognised university degree or vocational qualification. Applicants need to have a firm position from a German IT-related company.

Over 45s have to show the equivalent of at least €55,770 a year in income or pension income. The Federal Employment Agency also has to grant approval.

A different way is by holding an EU Blue Card, a quick-track residence permit for highly qualified professionals.

The applicant should have a university degree accepted in Germany and an offer of employment in the applicant’s field of study.

The minimum salary for a year is €45,934.20. The process is simplified once the salary is €50,700 or more, as there is no need for approval by the Federal Employment Agency.

Germany has also generated employment for IT industry professionals who lack degrees from universities.

An IT job offer or job offer with the stipulation of achieving the required salary level is required under the Experience Route, in addition to three years of work experience in the IT industry over the last seven years.

The second option is that if an applicant has 2 years of IT experience acquired in the last 5 years, they will be eligible if offered a job at a minimum of €45,630 per annum.

Furthermore, employers who are subject to a collective labour agreement may not be subject to the same salary ceiling requirements, if collective labour agreements provide the same protection and benefits for workers.
