The senior member of the recently banned terrorist organisation, Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), Umar Nazir Kashmiri, has reportedly attacked the police officials by opening fire at them.

As per the media reports, one of the police officials has been injured.

Umar Nazir Kashmiri, along with the mob, opened fire at the police officials appointed at the security measures over fake claims that Umar Kashmiri was attacked first by the police.

A firing exchange took place in Khai Gala, a town in Rawalakot Tehsil, resulting in the death of one civilian and serious injuries to two police personnel.

According to sources, a member of the core committee of the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee, Umar Nazir Kashmiri, and his companions were stopped at a checkpoint.

In response, Umar Nazir Kashmiri and his associates allegedly opened fire on the police, injuring two officers.

According to a spokesperson for Azad Kashmir Police, the incident occurred at around 11:45pm when armed suspects opened fire after being stopped at a checkpoint.

Following police retaliation, the armed individuals managed to escape.

Earlier, there were reports that Umar Nazir Kashmiri had been injured, but sources now confirm that he is safe and has gone into hiding.

The police spokesperson stated that an investigation into the incident has been initiated, and efforts are underway to arrest the suspects.

The President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has permanently banned the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) for its involvement in anti-state activities.

According to a notification issued by the Home Department of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on June 5, 2026, the President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has approved the declaration of the Jammu Kashmir Joint Public Action Committee (JK-JAAC), also known as the Joint Public Action Committee (JAAC) and Awami Action Committee (AAC), as a prohibited organization under the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Terrorism Act, 2014.

The notification states that the government has reasonable grounds to believe that the committee has been involved in activities related to terrorism, actions prejudicial to peace and public order, instilling fear among the public, spreading hatred, creating unrest within the State, and fostering a sense of insecurity in society.

According to the government, the activities of the Awami Action Committee have been deemed detrimental to the peace, security, and public safety of the State. Consequently, the organisation has been included in the First Schedule of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Anti-Terrorism Act, 2014.

The notification was issued by the Section Officer (Home). Copies have been forwarded to the relevant federal and state institutions, government secretaries, divisional commissioners, police authorities, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), and other concerned departments for necessary action.

Earlier, the spokesperson of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government said that the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) is spreading misleading and baseless narratives in the name of public issues.

According to the spokesperson, the government has chosen the path of dialogue, relief, and implementation, while the JAAC has opted for pressure and street politics instead of adopting a more flexible approach.

Spokesperson stated that JAAC is attempting to pressure the government through ongoing demonstrations, questioning the intent behind what he described as disruptive politics carried out under the guise of addressing public issues.
