Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has said that some elements are trying to disrupt free and transparent elections in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad alongside veteran Kashmiri politician Sardar Ateeq Ahmad Khan, the minister said the AJK Legislative Assembly has completed its constitutional term and the region is now preparing for elections.
Dr Chaudhry said the government has fulfilled most of the demands raised by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), yet certain groups continue to create unrest. He noted that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had formed a high-level committee to hold talks with the committee and implement the agreed points.
He said the government provided electricity in AJK at Rs3 per unit, offered subsidies on flour and other essential items, and improved internet services in the region.
According to the minister, despite these measures, the Joint Action Committee announced another protest campaign. He also criticised the committee’s demand to abolish refugee seats in the AJK Assembly, saying the courts have already made it clear that these constitutional seats cannot be removed without proper legislation.
Dr Chaudhry alleged that some people are provoking citizens in AJK and questioned whether there is an attempt to weaken the strong ties between Pakistan and Azad Kashmir or harm the Kashmir cause at a time when the world’s attention is focused on the region.
Speaking on the occasion, Sardar Ateeq Ahmad Khan urged the Joint Action Committee to adopt a flexible approach. He said the Government of Pakistan has already accepted most of the committee’s demands and has made sincere efforts to address public concerns through dialogue and practical steps.
