Argentina returns to top of FIFA rankings ahead of World Cup

Argentina has returned to the summit of world football after reclaiming first place in the latest FIFA World Rankings released in June, ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

The reigning world champions moved back to the top of the rankings for the first time since July 2025, ending an 11-month wait to regain the No 1 position. Spain retained second place in the standings, while France slipped two spots to third.

One of the biggest highlights of the latest rankings was Morocco’s historic rise to seventh place, the highest ranking ever achieved by the North African nation. Morocco now stands as the highest-ranked team among African and Arab countries.

The Netherlands dropped one position and now occupies eighth place in the global standings.

Meanwhile, Pakistan was among the teams that recorded notable progress in the rankings. The Pakistan national football team climbed four places, moving from 202nd to 198th position, reflecting recent improvements in its international performances.

FIFA has confirmed that the world rankings will also serve as a tiebreaker during the group stage of the upcoming World Cup, adding further significance to teams’ positions in the standings. The next edition of the FIFA World Rankings is scheduled to be released on July 20, 2026.
