Australia won over South Africa by 65 runs at Old Trafford, kicking off their Women’s T20 World Cup journey.
The Australians scored 8-172 in their 20 overs in Manchester on Sunday morning (AEST), a target that proved too challenging for South Africa, who were bowled out for 107 in just 16.4 overs.
Georgia Wareham, named player of the match for her 3-13 performance and a crucial batting contribution, praised the Aussie spirit, highlighting Phoebe Litchfield, who scored 50, and new captain Sophie Molineux for special mentions.
“With our batting lineup, you can play with confidence and freedom. Phoebe was fantastic, and it was a solid all-around team performance,” she stated.
While some Aussie batters did not perform at their best, the team’s depth allowed them to set a formidable total, which was clearly too much for the South Africans.
The Australian bowling attack quickly got to work, dismissing Sune Luus, Annerie Dercksen, and Nadine de Klerk within the first seven overs, leaving South Africa at 48.
Australia had missed a chance to catch De Klerk during the powerplay, but Wareham, besides her three wickets, made two crucial fielding plays.
After scoring a significant 32, Wareham ran out the dangerous all-rounder Marizanne Kapp for 12 with a precise throw from the deep and then took a smart low catch at cover to dismiss the threatening Laura Wolvaardt for 44.
The match was nearly secured, as the South African tail offered little resistance while Australia cruised towards victory.
Annabel Sutherland scored quick late runs, making 21 off 14 balls, as the six-time world champions found their rhythm impressively.
