A rapidly spreading measles outbreak in Sindh has claimed the lives of several children and infected more than 2,000 others, raising serious public health concerns across the province.
According to reports, over 2,000 children have contracted measles in Sindh this year, and 53 have died as a result of the disease. Health experts have expressed concern over the rising number of measles cases and are urging parents to ensure their children are vaccinated.
Speaking to a private TV channel, paediatrician Dr Khalid Shafi said that more than 2,000 children have been affected by measles across Sindh this year. He added that 96 measles-related deaths have been reported nationwide, including 53 deaths in Sindh caused by complications arising from the disease.
Doctors viewed that the primary reason for the spread of measles in the province is low vaccination coverage. Dr Khalid Shafi emphasised that measles is both preventable and treatable, yet it continues to spread because many children remain unvaccinated. He urged parents to have their children vaccinated without delay.
Measles is a highly contagious disease that mainly affects children. Those who have not been vaccinated are at greater risk of infection. Early symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, and skin rash. In severe cases, measles can significantly weaken the immune system and may even prove fatal.
