Former Captain Shahid Afridi visits UN headquarters

Former Pakistan cricket captain and also great all-rounder Shahid Afridi was invited to the United Nations Headquarters in New York by Pakistan Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad.

Afridi was given an extensive tour of the UN Headquarters and briefed on its activities in the fields of international peace and security, sustainable development and multilateral cooperation.

This visit gave the former cricketer the chance to learn about the work of the United Nations and the importance of diplomacy and collaboration in solving the world’s problems.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad greeted Afridi at the UN and commended his wonderful services to Pakistan cricket.

He applauded the former captain for his aggressive batting style and match-winning skills that entertained millions of cricket fans globally to become one of Pakistan’s most celebrated sports personalities.

The ambassador also appreciated Afridi’s humanitarian and welfare efforts, which have helped bring a smile to many faces, especially in areas of Pakistan where people often lack access to basic facilities.

Ambassador Asim emphasised that sports has a significant and important place in the promotion of peace, goodwill and understanding between the countries even during negotiations.

Sports can be a great way to foster international cooperation and integration beyond political and cultural boundaries, he said.

The ambassador also briefed Afridi on the activities of Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, the country’s work to support multilateralism, dialogue and diplomacy, and its role in fostering peace and security in the world.

Afridi thanked the Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad and Pakistan Mission for the invitation and hospitality given to him during his visit.

It was also celebrated with a dinner hosted by the ambassador in Afridi’s name.
