Iran leave emotional locker-room letter after WC draw with Belgium

Iran’s national football team left an emotional handwritten letter in their locker room at Sofitel Stadium following their goalless draw against Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The message, addressed to the host city and fans worldwide, expressed gratitude for the hospitality shown in Los Angeles while delivering a powerful appeal for peace, respect, and friendship among nations.

According to reports, the letter was written after Iran’s 0-0 draw with Belgium, a result that kept the team’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive. The note reflected on the team’s journey, challenges, and determination, emphasising that the spirit of Iran remains strong despite difficult circumstances.

Issued by the Iranian Football Federation, the letter reflected on the team’s journey, challenges, and passion. It stated that from ancient Persia to modern Iran, the spirit of the Iranian people remains alive and strong.

Addressing the host city, the team wrote: “Los Angeles, thank you for your hospitality. We came here with pride, competed with honour, and are leaving with dignity.”

The message also expressed gratitude to Iranian supporters around the world who passionately backed the team during both matches. It thanked every Iranian who dedicated their heart, voice, and soul to supporting the national team throughout those 180 minutes of football.

The letter concluded with a call for peace, respect, and friendship among all nations. It also included the hashtags #168 and #Minab, referring to an attack on a school in the Iranian city of Minab, which was described as a tragic incident amid the ongoing conflict.

Iran played both of its group-stage matches in Los Angeles, while the team’s base camp was located in Tijuana, Mexico. The squad regularly crossed the border to play its matches.

Iran’s first game ended in a 2-2 draw against New Zealand, followed by a goalless draw against Belgium. The large Iranian community in Los Angeles created an atmosphere that made both matches feel almost like home games for Iran. However, political divisions were also visible among the spectators. Some fans waved the flag of the current Iranian government, while others displayed the pre-1979 Lion and Sun flag.
