Venezuela earthquake: At least 32 dead, over 700 injured in magnitude 7.5 quake

Venezuela earthquake of magnitude 7.5 today

At least 32 people were killed and more than 700 injured after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Thursday, causing widespread destruction, damaging buildings, and prompting authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez confirmed the casualties in a national address, warning that the toll could rise as rescue teams continue operations in affected areas, particularly in La Guaira, one of the hardest-hit regions near the capital Caracas.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck about 160 kilometres west of Caracas and was followed less than a minute later by a stronger magnitude 7.5 tremor. The agency warned that high casualties and extensive damage were likely.

The quakes caused buildings to collapse in several parts of the country, including Caracas, where emergency workers searched through rubble for survivors. Authorities activated firefighters, police, and civil defence teams to assist rescue and relief efforts.

Residents rushed into the streets as buildings shook violently. Witnesses described scenes of panic, with people fleeing homes and offices while emergency services responded to reports of collapsed structures and trapped victims.

Hospitals in the capital were placed on high alert to treat the injured, while some municipalities suspended classes and public events as officials assessed the extent of the damage.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said he was “deeply saddened by the devastation and loss of life” caused by the quakes.

“On behalf of the people of Pakistan, I convey our heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Venezuela, especially the families of the victims. We pray for the injured and stand in solidarity with all those affected during this difficult and challenging time,” he said.

President Asif Ali Zardari also expressed deep grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives and widespread devastation caused by the quakes.

Zardari said that “the people of Pakistan stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela and share their grief”.

“He also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the disaster and for strength and resilience for all those affected,” according to a statement from the Presidency.

A tsunami warning issued after the earthquakes was later withdrawn, while authorities continued rescue operations and damage assessments across the country.
