Ireland created history by defeating India in the first T20 International, securing their maiden victory over India in international cricket.
Chasing a target of 183, India were bowled out for just 148 in Belfast as Ireland produced a clinical all-round performance to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match T20I series.
Matt Hollard and Humphries starred with the ball for Ireland, claiming three wickets each and keeping the Indian batting line-up under constant pressure. With this victory, Ireland took a 1-0 lead in the two-match T20I series.
More than 4,000 fans packed Stormont Cricket Ground, eager to witness teenage batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi make his international debut for India. However, the visitors chose to keep the 15-year-old on the bench after winning the toss and electing to field.
Ireland, led by newly appointed captain Lorcan Tucker, made the most of the opportunity. Tucker’s composed half-century anchored the innings as the hosts posted a competitive 182/9.
India began the chase aggressively, with Abhishek Sharma smashing a rapid 49 off just 20 deliveries. But Ireland’s bowlers fought back brilliantly to seize control. Matt Hollard starred with figures of 3/28, while India-born spinner Moondra claimed 2/26 as India were bowled out for 148, sealing Ireland’s first-ever international victory over India.
Abhishek Sharma led India’s fightback with a blistering 49 off just 20 deliveries, but the star-studded batting line-up ultimately fell short against a disciplined and inspired Irish bowling attack.
Left-arm spinner Matthew Humphreys and Matt Hollard starred with three wickets each, while debutant Jai Moondra enjoyed a dream start to his international career, returning impressive figures of 2/25 from his four overs. The two sides will meet again in the second and final T20I on Sunday.
