Pakistan and Italy have signed a €20 million (Rs6.3 billion) concessional loan agreement to strengthen Pakistan’s agricultural technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system.
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the agreement was signed by Secretary for Economic Affairs Muhammad Hamair Karim and Italian Ambassador Marilena Armellin.
Under the project, the capacity of farmers and agricultural extension staff will be enhanced through modern, market-oriented training programmes. The initiative aims to increase agricultural productivity, promote sustainable farming practices, and improve the livelihoods of rural communities.
The ministry said the project will support the development of high-value crops and strengthen agro-food value chains. Dedicated training centres will be established for individuals involved in horticultural production, processing, and marketing. Special focus will be given to crops including olives, pistachios, dates, mushrooms, cherries, grapes, peaches, and almonds.
The spokesperson added that the project will combine Italy’s modern agricultural expertise with Pakistan’s vast agricultural potential. During the 42-month programme, 720 training courses will be conducted, benefiting18,398 participants. In addition,11 standardised training curricula will be developed for the agriculture sector.
The project also includes the establishment of12 model orchards and nurseries, eight climate-resilient, eco-friendly villages, five agricultural and food processing units, and two National Centres of Excellence. These centres will focus on kinoo and malta (citrus) production in Sargodha and date palm production in Turbat.
The Pakistan Oilseed Department, in collaboration with the provincial agriculture departments, will implement the project.
