Tuition centre roof collapses in Lahore, over 25 children trapped

A tuition centre roof collapsed in Lahore’s Kahna area on Tuesday, trapping more than 25 children under the debris. Rescue teams have pulled 18 children to safety by now, while six have been reported to be in critical condition. A teacher was also injured in the incident.

According to the latest details, 14 children have died in the collapse. According to the reports, the children who have lost their lives were aged between 12 and 15.

Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz has taken notice of the roof collapse incident. She has also sought a detailed report from the authorities. Police have detained two brothers who were the owner of the tuition centre.

According to Rescue 1122 officials, more than 20 injured children and one teacher were pulled from the debris and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Rescue teams, along with the local residents, continued clearing the rubble in search of children who were still trapped. According to initial reports, at least seven children were believed to remain under the collapsed roof.
Rescue 1122 Punjab spokesperson Farooq Ahmed said that initial information suggested construction work was underway on the roof when it suddenly gave way. He said emergency teams reached the scene shortly after receiving the call.
He added that more than 12 children were in critical condition. Further saying that the injured were between four and 10 years old. He said the main priority was to rescue everyone trapped and provide immediate medical care.
Punjab’s health minister also declared an emergency at nearby hospitals to ensure treatment for the injured children.
Family members and local residents gathered at the accident site and hospitals as rescue efforts continued.
Dawn reported that the Edhi rescue service said the roof of a room in a residential building, where the tuition centre was operating, collapsed suddenly. According to its initial assessment, the roof had been built using TR girders.
Edhi said its ambulances remained at the scene while rescue teams continued operations.
“Rescue operations are continuing at full pace, while Edhi ambulances remain on-site to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured,” the statement added, Dawn reports.
Initial reports suggested that around 30 to 35 children were present at the tuition centre when the roof collapsed.
