Fourteen prisoners escaped from a prison van while being transported to Rawalpindi, according to police on Monday. Police said that the incident took place near the Chakkian Post area.
Following the escape, police launched a search operation in the surrounding area. Four of the escaped prisoners were later rearrested.
Authorities have cordoned off the area and set up checkpoints as part of the ongoing search, according to police sources.
Special police teams have also been formed to trace and arrest the remaining escaped prisoners, reports add. Police said efforts are continuing to locate the fugitives.
Fourteen prisoners escaped from a prison van while being transported from Kahuta to Rawalpindi on Monday, police said.
According to police, the prisoners had been brought from Adiala Jail to a court in Kahuta for a hearing earlier in the day.
Police sources said that the prison van was carrying 36 prisoners. While being transported back to Adiala Jail, some of the accused created a disturbance inside the vehicle before throwing chilli powder into the eyes of police personnel and escaping.
The incident occurred near Chakkian Post within the limits of Islamabad, police added. The escaped prisoners were nominated in various serious criminal cases.
Following the incident, police launched a search operation in the area and set up checkpoints. Four of the escaped prisoners have since been rearrested, while efforts are underway to trace the remaining fugitives.
Police said details of all the escaped prisoners have been shared with senior law enforcement authorities. And special teams have been formed to arrest those still at large.
Under-trial prisoner escapes from Rawalpindi hospital
Previously, two police officials and two other persons had been booked after a convicted prisoner who was shifted from Adiala Jail to Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH) for treatment escaped. After which, a case of the incident was registered at Waris Khan police station.
According to the police, the escaped accused has been identified as Jamil, who was arrested in a drug smuggling case and convicted by the court.
The reports further add that police ASI Imran Ahmed and Constable Qamar Ali, who were posted on duty, have also been named.
According to the FIR, the escaped accused was taken out of the ward by his son, Adnan and an unknown person in a wheelchair. Later, the accused, who was undergoing treatment, was put in a car and fled the scene.
