Pakistan plans to set up around 3,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country by 2030. The Ministry of Industries and Production shared the plan in a written reply to the National Assembly.
Where will the charging stations be set up?
The government’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025-30 includes an initial plan to build 40 fast-charging stations along motorways and selected parts of the National Highway (N-5).
Charging points are also planned at intervals of around 50 kilometres on major highways. The aim is to make it easier for people to travel in electric vehicles.
The ministry shared these details while responding to a question from lawmaker Malik Shakir Bashir Awan.
How will the government expand EV charging?
Under the policy, fuel stations will be encouraged to install EV charging units. The government also plans to increase the number of fast-charging points and Level 1 and Level 2 charging facilities.
Battery-swapping stations will also be set up for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. These stations will allow users to replace used batteries with charged ones.
How will private companies be encouraged to invest?
The government plans to offer special electricity rates for EV charging stations. It will also make it easier and faster for businesses to get electricity connections.
Public-private partnerships will be used to support the expansion. The plan also includes financial support to help make some projects possible.
What will happen to old EV batteries?
The policy also covers the safe collection and transport of used EV batteries. It includes plans to reuse, dismantle and recycle old batteries, especially lithium-ion batteries.
The ministry said work is under way to prepare rules for battery management. A nationwide network of battery collection and recycling facilities is also planned.
