WAPDA Chairman Muhammad Saeed explains consumer complaints WAPDA's role

WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen (R) Muhammad Saeed has clarified that the authority has had no role in electricity transmission, distribution, billing or maintenance of the power infrastructure for nearly two decades.

In a statement shared on his X account, the WAPDA chairman said the authority’s restructuring process began in 1997 and was completed in 2007.

He explained that, following the restructuring, all regional electricity supply boards were converted into distribution companies (DISCOs) and placed under the Power Division. The National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), now known as the National Grid Company (NGC), was also brought under the same system.

Muhammad Saeed said WAPDA was transferred to the Ministry of Water Resources in 2007 and has since been responsible only for the strategic management of water resources, construction of dams, hydropower projects, canals and other major water infrastructure.

He added that electricity generated by WAPDA’s hydropower plants is supplied in bulk to the National Grid Company, after which WAPDA has no role in the national grid or electricity supply system.

Despite this, the chairman said WAPDA has continued to receive letters, complaints and allegations for almost 20 years regarding power outages, faulty infrastructure and electricity billing.

He said he issued the clarification because the authority frequently receives complaints related to electricity bills, meters, transformers, solar and net metering procedures, and distribution lines.

“The WAPDA has no role in any of these matters,” he said.

Muhammad Saeed urged consumers to contact the relevant power distribution companies instead of WAPDA, warning that approaching the wrong institution only delays the resolution of their complaints.
