England will face a challenging test against hosts Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the historic Azteca Stadium.
The legendary venue, known as a fortress for the Mexican national team, has traditionally proven difficult for visiting sides, with opponents often struggling to secure positive results on its intimidating ground.
With nearly 88,000 passionate fans in attendance and an altitude of 7,220 feet (2,200 metres) above sea level, the stadium presents a unique challenge for opponents. Mexico is fully accustomed to these conditions, giving the hosts a significant home advantage.
Over the past 60 years, Mexico has played 89 matches at the Azteca Stadium, winning 70, drawing 17, and losing only twice. The Mexican national team has not suffered a defeat at the Azteca since 2013.
Mexico’s FIFA World Cup record at the stadium is equally remarkable. The team is unbeaten in all 10 of its World Cup matches there and has kept eight clean sheets.
The Azteca Stadium is also the only stadium in history to have hosted matches at the 1970, 1986, and 2026 FIFA World Cups. It is also the only venue to have hosted two men’s FIFA World Cup finals.
