The Indian actor and comedian, Rajpal Yadav, has been sentenced to three months in jail after the Delhi High Court upheld his conviction in multiple cheque bounce cases.
According to Indian media reports, Justice Sorna Kanta Sharma sentenced Yadav in seven separate cases filed by M/S Murli Projects Private Limited. Although the court awarded a three-month prison term in each case, the sentences will run concurrently, meaning the actor will serve a total of three months in prison.
The court also directed Yadav to pay Rs150 million (Rs15 crore) in compensation to the complainant in each case. In addition, he was ordered to pay further amounts, including Rs104,000, Rs75,000 and Rs25,000 to the state.
The court also imposed a fine of more than Rs500 million (Rs50 crore) in each case on Yadav’s wife, Radha Rajpal Yadav, according to the reports.
While announcing the verdict, Justice Sharma said Yadav had been given several opportunities to resolve the matter and honour his commitments but had failed to do so.
The judge noted that the actor and his legal counsel had repeatedly given assurances before the court but did not fulfil their promises despite being granted multiple chances.
Yadav, who was released on interim bail in February, has been granted two months to challenge the ruling before a higher court.
The cases relate to dishonoured cheques, with further legal proceedings expected.
