Lahore Traffic Police have launched a special crackdown against underage drivers, people driving without a licence, and triple riding on motorcycles, ARY News reported.
As many people travel with family and friends on the weekly holiday, traffic police are carrying out special operations across the city on Sunday.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Abdul Rahim Shirazi said police will issue traffic challans to underage drivers and impound their cars or motorcycles. He added that authorities will release the vehicles only after the owners present a valid Juvenile Permit.
The CTO said many children drive motorcycles, cars and even rickshaws on public roads during holidays, which is why the department decided to launch the operation on Sunday.
He also warned that traffic police will take strict action against triple riding on motorcycles to improve road safety.
Meanwhile, Karachi Traffic Police are preparing a new policy to ban all types of rickshaws from city roads. DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah said only meter-fitted rickshaws will be allowed to operate under the proposed policy.
He said the e-ticketing system, introduced under the Safe City project, has improved traffic flow along with lane markings across Karachi. He added that traffic police are removing Qingqi rickshaws from major roads and continue to seize vehicles with fake number plates before handing them over to the concerned police stations.
The DIG also acknowledged public complaints about the e-challan system. He said e-challans are issued automatically, and mistakes can happen. The department is now preparing a policy to provide relief to affected motorists.
He added that traffic police have issued fewer e-challans so far than the number of manual challans issued last year. Police are also issuing e-tickets to motorcyclists who ride in the fourth lane in violation of traffic rules.
