The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has predicted the moon sighting date of Safar.
Pakistan’s space agency SUPARCO has said there is a strong possibility that the moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Safar will be sighted on the evening of Wednesday, July 15, with the first day of the month expected to fall on Thursday, July 16.
According to SUPARCO, the new moon of Safar 1448 AH will be born at 2:44pm on Tuesday.
By sunset on Wednesday, the moon is expected to be around 29 hours old, while the interval between sunset and moonset in coastal areas is likely to be about 65 minutes, creating favourable conditions for visibility.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has also forecast a high probability of the moon being sighted on Wednesday evening. It said the new moon would appear at around 2:43pm, and that visibility conditions would be favourable across most parts of the country, including Sindh.
In Karachi, the PMD said the moon is expected to remain above the horizon for about 64 minutes after sunset, with moonset forecast at 8:28pm.
Despite the favourable astronomical forecasts, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will make the official announcement after reviewing moon sighting reports from across the country.
Safar is the second month of the Islamic lunar calendar, following Muharram.
