Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has announced his party’s support for the proposed amendment to Article 243 of the Constitution while firmly rejecting any attempts to alter the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award or provincial shares.
Chairing a meeting of the PPP Central Executive Committee (CEC), Bilawal stated that the party backs constitutional discussions related to the 27th Amendment but will oppose any move that weakens provincial autonomy. He reiterated that while the PPP supports reforms enhancing civil-military coordination under Article 243, it would resist efforts to amend Article 160(3A) or undermine the 18th Amendment.
Briefing reporters, Bilawal noted the proposals include assigning a new title for the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and establishing a position linked to the National Strategic Command.
“The CEC has permitted me to state that the PPP will support these proposals,” Bilawal said, emphasising that the party’s stance is guided by institutional stability and national security considerations.
During the meeting, several senior PPP leaders voiced concern over federal proposals to reclaim powers related to education and population management. The CEC meeting ended inconclusively and will reconvene today to continue deliberations on the constitutional amendments.
