The All Pakistan Goods Transporters Alliance has suspended its nationwide strike for 40 days following assurances from the government.
Earlier, the alliance had announced a nine-day nationwide strike over demands including a reduction in toll taxes, resolution of parking issues, petroleum price concerns and axle-load limits.
Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan said a committee would be formed to review and reduce toll taxes. He added that petroleum prices would be revised every 15 days or monthly instead of being adjusted on a daily basis. He further assured transporters that 10-wheeler trucks would be allowed to carry appropriate weight limits.
Sindh Governor Nehal Hashmi said the Prime Minister and Field Marshal were making efforts to ensure that the positive impact of recent developments reached the public.
It is pertinent to mention that tensions between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to fluctuations in global petroleum prices, affecting economies and consumers worldwide. However, Pakistan, as a developing economy, is particularly vulnerable to such global price shocks. The government is therefore making efforts to minimise the impact on the public and transport sector.
Recently, the government of Pakistan has decided not to change the price of petrol and diesel for the next three days.
The price of petrol is still fixed at Rs325.43 per litre, and the price of high-speed diesel is Rs383.95 per litre.
