The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted another nationwide monsoon rain spell from tomorrow (July 29) to August 5.
According to the PMD, fresh monsoon currents will begin entering the upper and central parts of the country from July 29, warning that heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods, urban flooding and landslides in several regions.
Regions expected to receive heavy rain
- Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree and Galiyat: Rain expected from July 29 to August 4
- Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK): Rainfall forecast from the night of July 28 to August 5
- Gilgit-Baltistan: Rain and thunderstorms expected from the evening of July 28 to August 6
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Most districts likely to receive widespread rainfall from July 29 to August 5
- Central and Northern Punjab: Rain expected from July 29 to August 4
- Southern Punjab: Rain and thunderstorms forecast from July 31 to August 3
- Eastern and Southern Balochistan: Rain expected from July 31 to August 3
- Sindh: Several districts likely to receive rain and thunderstorms from July 31 to August 2
Areas at risk of flooding
The PMD has warned of possible urban flooding in several major cities, including:
- Islamabad
- Rawalpindi
- Lahore
- Faisalabad
- Multan
- Gujranwala
- Gujrat
- Sialkot
- Peshawar
- Nowshera
- Kashmir
- Murree
- Galiyat
- Gilgit-Baltistan
- Dera Ghazi Khan
- Northeastern Balochistan
Moreover, the department warned that strong winds and lightning could damage weak buildings, solar panels, power poles and billboards. It advised tourists to stay cautious and urged farmers to protect their crops and livestock. The disaster management authorities to remain alert throughout the monsoon spell.
Previously, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned that there is a risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the first week of August.
The Met Office said that hot weather and periods of rain are likely to melt more snow and ice in mountain areas.
