A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck Swat today, triggering brief panic among residents. However, authorities confirmed that no casualties or property damage were reported.
According to the Seismological Centre and the district administration, the earthquake occurred at 12:40pm. The tremor originated at a depth of 166 kilometres.
The quake was felt across several parts of Swat, prompting some residents to temporarily evacuate their homes and workplaces as a precaution.
Officials said the situation remained normal after the tremors, with no reports of injuries or structural damage.
Authorities continue to monitor the area and have urged residents to stay vigilant and follow safety precautions in case of any aftershocks.
Japan issues Tsunami warning after powerful 7.1 earthquake
A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southern Japan on Tuesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
Following the quake, the JMA issued a tsunami warning for waves of up to 1 meter (3.3 feet) along parts of the southern coast.
The Japanese government also released emergency earthquake alerts for several prefectures on Kyushu Island, including Kumamoto, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita, and Miyazaki, urging residents to remain cautious.
Japan is among the world’s most earthquake-prone countries due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone where multiple tectonic plates meet. The country experiences frequent seismic activity and accounts for nearly 20% of the world’s earthquakes measuring magnitude 6.0 or higher.
Authorities reported no abnormalities at Kyushu Electric Power’s Sendai and Genkai nuclear power plants following the earthquake.
Meanwhile, railway operator JR Kyushu suspended several train services, including its Shinkansen high-speed rail, as a precaution after the powerful tremor.
