Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Series 12 expected to launch this year

Apple Watch Ultra 4

Apple is preparing a busy end to the year, with new smartwatch models and updated iPhones expected in the pipeline, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman outlined Apple’s product roadmap, saying the company is likely to launch the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 alongside the next iPhone lineup, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and even a new foldable iPhone.

Ultra line returns to annual cycle

The Apple Watch Ultra range has not followed a fixed yearly release pattern. The first model arrived in 2022, followed by the Ultra 2 in 2023. In 2024, Apple only refreshed the colour option without changing the core hardware. The Ultra 3 then arrived in 2025.

Now, reports suggest Apple is not skipping a year this time, with the Ultra 4 expected to arrive in 2026.

Possible redesign and new health features

Early leaks and industry reports suggest the Apple Watch Ultra 4 could feature a major redesign, although details remain unclear. Another possibility is an upgrade to its sensing capabilities, which may improve health and fitness tracking.

Apple has also been working on more advanced health tools, including non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. However, this technology is still believed to be several years away as development continues.

There are also reports that Apple is testing biometric authentication, including Touch ID for future Apple Watch models. It is not yet known how this would work, but possible options include integration into the side button or under-display technology. If introduced, it could reduce the need for passcodes, although current models already use wrist detection for security.

Future display and software upgrades

Looking further ahead, Apple is reportedly exploring new display technology from LG Display, known as high-mobility oxide (HMO) panels. This could improve power efficiency compared with current OLED LTPO displays by allowing electrons to move more efficiently, helping extend battery life.

On the software side, watchOS 27 is expected to introduce new watch faces, including updated versions of the Modular Ultra design for upcoming models.

Launch timeline

The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are expected to be announced in September, alongside the next generation of iPhones. As usual, Apple is likely to unveil the devices at its annual autumn event.

For now, most details remain unconfirmed, and Apple has not commented on the upcoming products.
