Karachi-based Asim Khan faced defeat in the Mixed Martial Arts semifinal.
Under the rules, Asim Khan managed to win the bronze medal, the medal ceremony for which will be held tomorrow.
Dilawar Khan, who is performing the duties of team leader with Asim Khan at the Games, told a private news media outlet that Asim Khan has opened Pakistan’s medal account, adding that he is confident Pakistan will also succeed in winning medals in the remaining events.
He said that this is Asim Khan’s first medal at the Asian Games; however, he has previously won a World bronze medal and an Asian silver medal.
Asim Khan will return to Karachi on Wednesday.
On the other hand, the series of poor performances by Pakistani athletes continues.
In the 50-metre freestyle, swimmer Hamza Asif had secured second position in his heat (a heat is one of several separate races held in the same event, usually because there are too many swimmers to compete in one race at once).
However, he finished 30th in the overall results.
In the triathlon mixed final, the Pakistani team finished last. Sana Arif, Aneesha, and Mustaghis Noor completed the 300-metre swimming, 7-kilometre cycling, and 2-kilometre running, while Ali Hassan could not complete the event within the stipulated time, due to which the overall result was declared NDF.
According to coach Abdul Ghaffar Gujjar, he is satisfied with the performance of his athletes, while Pakistan stood 14th in the overall ranking.
In the soft tennis mixed doubles competition, the Pakistani team suffered heavy defeats against Chinese Taipei, Korea, and the Philippines.
The Pakistan women’s team lost to traditional rivals India in the table tennis group match.
