The Azeempura Flyover in the Shah Faisal Colony, Karachi, is expected to open to traffic on June 15.
The officials have told the media that the construction work has entered its final phase.
The Rs1.47 billion project was launched earlier this year by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to address chronic traffic congestion at one of the city’s busiest intersections.
According to the latest progress update, the main structure of the flyover has been completed, while road carpeting and expansion-joint installation are currently underway ahead of the planned opening date.
Located at the Azeempura intersection, the flyover is designed to improve traffic flow between Shah Faisal Colony, Korangi, Malir, Shahrah-e-Bhutto and routes leading to Karachi Airport.
The junction has long been considered a major bottleneck, with traffic from residential neighbourhoods, commercial areas and airport-bound roads converging at the same point.
The project extends beyond the construction of the flyover itself. It includes road widening, rehabilitation of surrounding roads, drainage improvements, rainwater disposal infrastructure and the installation of new street lighting.
Officials say the flyover will span approximately 700 metres, while a 625-metre dual-track road will connect Shahrah-e-Bhutto with the Shah Faisal roundabout. The scheme also includes reconstruction of the roundabout, upgrades to adjoining roads and parking areas, and the installation of 93 streetlight poles fitted with 157 LED lights.
Earlier in the construction process, temporary traffic diversions and road closures were introduced around Shah Faisal Town Road and Shahrah-e-Bhutto to accelerate work on the project.
For thousands of commuters travelling daily between Shah Faisal Colony, Korangi and Malir, the opening of the flyover is expected to reduce travel times and ease congestion on key routes. It is also expected to improve access to Shahrah-e-Faisal, Malir Halt and the airport corridor.
If completed on schedule, the project will meet the 100-day target announced at its launch. However, transport experts note that the long-term benefits will depend on effective traffic management, regular maintenance, proper drainage during the monsoon season and preventing encroachments along the improved corridor.
