England captain and Test star Ben Stokes is said to be considering his next steps as skipper after allegedly being involved in a fight at a night club after defeating New Zealand at Lord’s.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is probing Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson for allegedly breaking team curfew and getting involved in a late night spat, according to several British media outlets.
The clash is said to have taken place around 1 am on Monday after England beat New Zealand in the first Test of the three-match series in Adelaide by a huge 115 runs.
The two were reported as being out with friends when an altercation erupted, which included rugby player Totoa Auvaa, a former Samoa international.
A security guard who was on site with England players was also among those who were injured.
After this, there has been a renewed focus on the culture of England’s team. Especially the drinking habits of players are under scrutiny.
The squad for England’s second Test at The Oval is yet to be announced.
There is speculation that Stokes may not be able to continue as captain.
The 35-year-old could be forced to step down from the job he has held since 2022, according to reports, but he may be able to avoid losing his position at the ECB.
It is also rumoured that he is thinking about retiring from international cricket as well.
Stokes’ leadership situation is now “in severe doubt,” former England captain David Gower said, adding that “captains must lead by example and follow team rules.”
Gower said Stokes will most likely be in a lot of trouble.
Leading the charge for the England Test captaincy is vice-captain Harry Brook, who has led the team in white-ball cricket, should Stokes leave be dropped.
