The chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, inaugurated a 39-kilometre signal-free section of Shahrah-e-Bhutto in Karachi on May 22.

The Shahrah-e-Bhutto, formally known as Malir Expressway, will now provide a new corridor linking the route to Karachi Port.

The inauguration ceremony for Phase III of the road project was held on Friday, after which the route from Qayyumabad to the M-9 Motorway at Kathore was opened to traffic.

Addressing the gathering, Mr Bhutto Zardari said his party had delivered major development projects in Karachi since 2008 and described the latest infrastructure scheme as an important addition to the city’s transport network.

He said inaugurating projects in Karachi held special significance for him because he was born and raised in the city.

The PPP chairman highlighted several infrastructure projects associated with his party, including the development of major roads and transport corridors.

He also pointed to healthcare initiatives in Sindh, saying the provincial government had expanded access to free medical services across the province.

Mr Bhutto Zardari said Karachi remained Pakistan’s economic hub and a major centre for healthcare services, attracting people from across the country.

He added that Shahrah-e-Bhutto had been developed under a public-private partnership model, which he said demonstrated the government’s ability to complete large-scale infrastructure projects.

Speaking about economic challenges, he said rising living costs continued to affect ordinary citizens and noted that international developments were also contributing to pressure on fuel and electricity prices.

The PPP chairman said the Sindh government was working to provide relief through initiatives, including support for farmers under the Kissan Card programme and assistance for motorcycle riders.

The Shahrah-e-Bhutto project is intended to improve connectivity between Karachi’s urban areas and key transport routes, while easing traffic congestion in one of Pakistan’s largest cities.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari attended the event alongside Sindh Chief Minister (CM), Syed Murad Ali Shah, as well as senior provincial ministers, lawmakers and government officials.

During the ceremony, the PPP chairman also launched Phase II of the project, which aims to connect Shahrah-e-Bhutto with Karachi Port through the proposed Qayyumabad Corridor.
