The Federal Finance Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Aurangzeb, said on Friday during the Budget 2026-27 session that a record 17 per cent increase has been proposed for the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) budget.
While presenting the federal budget in the National Assembly, he said that the total BISP budget is proposed to be increased to Rs838 billion.
He said that the Kafalat Programme will be expanded and its coverage will reach 12 million families across the country.
The finance minister further added that the educational scholarship programme will also be expanded. Around 9.2 million children are expected to benefit from these scholarships.
Other govt schemes
Muhammad Aurangzeb further said that Rs71 billion has been allocated for the Prime Minister’s Apna Ghar Scheme in the budget.
According to the budget documents, the total size of the federal budget is proposed at Rs18.771 trillion. An amount of Rs8.054 trillion has been allocated for debt servicing.
The government is expected to spend Rs1.169 trillion on pensions. Out of this amount, Rs822 billion will be spent on military pensions. Additionally, Rs272 billion will be allocated for civil pensions.
The budget documents show that Rs3 trillion has been proposed for defence spending. A total of Rs1.091 trillion has been allocated for subsidies.
According to the documents, civil government expenditures are estimated at Rs1.071 trillion. An amount of Rs430 billion has been set aside to deal with emergency situations. In addition to this, the current expenditures are estimated at Rs17.495 trillion.
The budget documents further state that the federal development budget will be Rs1.05 trillion. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has been given a tax collection target of Rs15.264 trillion.
BISP increases quarterly stipend
According to a recent update, BISP has decided to increase the quarterly stipend to 18,000 rupees.
According to the reports, the federal government has approved this increase for the next financial year.
The purpose of this step is to give extra financial help to families with low income who are facing rising inflation.
BISP Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid said that the program is a major source of financial support for poor and vulnerable families. She also said it helps improve the financial independence of women.
