While buying a used car in Pakistan is a wise and cost-effective option, it can also be an expensive misjudgment if the buyer doesn’t thoroughly examine the car.
There are thousands of used cars on the market, but there are a few items that you should take a look at before buying and you will save yourself a lot of headaches and repair bills.
Check the Documents: Always check the original registration, token tax records and the seller’s CNIC. Ensure that the engine and the number plate are correct as per official documents.
Vehicle Ownership Check: Ensure that the person selling the car is the legal owner of the vehicle. Don’t purchase vehicles that have incomplete transfer papers or questionable ownership.
Check the Engine: Look for abnormal noises, smoke, oil leaks or overheating. If the engine is weak, then the cost of major repairs can potentially go to thousands of Rupees.
Check for major accidents: Look for repairs or rust to the paint, doors, bonnet and panels of the Car Body. Gaps between panels, or uneven paint can mean there was an accident.
Review the mileage: Examine the car’s overall condition. If the car has very few miles on it and is an older model, it could be a red flag.
Test Drive: Drive the car and test the steering, brakes, clutch, gearbox, suspension and overall handling. Pay attention to odd sounds when driving.
Check Tyres: If the tyres are worn or are poorly aligned, it may be a problem with their suspension or alignment. If all four tires need replacing, that will cost you a lot more, too.
Test AC and Electronics: Make sure AC, power windows, lights, infotainment, indicators and other electrical items work properly before closing the deal.
Bring a trusted Mechanic: If you know little or nothing about cars, have a trusted mechanic accompany you. A professional inspection may be able to find issues that a regular purchaser would not.
Before negotiating, check the Market Price: Compare the prices of similar models, years and conditions. Don’t rush a deal just because the price seems good.
