Transferring personal data safely to a new phone when replacing an old device is extremely important, as even a moment of negligence can potentially lead to blackmail.
Cybersecurity expert Asif Iqbal has warned users about the risks associated with protecting mobile phones, laptops and other digital devices. He explained that having data transferred through untrusted shops or installing suspicious applications can increase the risk of unauthorised access to photos, videos and contacts.
He said mobile phones have become important repositories of private information, including personal photos, videos, messages, contact numbers and other sensitive data. However, even minor negligence while changing a phone, getting it repaired or transferring data from one device to another can have serious consequences.
In some cases, users’ personal data may be copied or transferred without authorisation. Stolen data can later be sold or misused for blackmail.
The cybersecurity expert advised users to have phone repairs, privacy-related work or data transfers carried out in their presence whenever possible. He also urged users not to give anyone unnecessary access to sensitive information, warning that failure to do so could create serious problems.
He further recommended keeping a strong password or other security features enabled on mobile phones so that personal information cannot be easily accessed if the device is lost or stolen.
Iqbal also stressed the need for extreme caution when using mobile applications, advising users to thoroughly check the reputation of an unfamiliar app before installing it.
Many apps request access to a device’s gallery, microphone, contacts and location during installation. Users should grant only the permissions that are necessary and, where available, choose options that provide limited access.
He said users who store particularly sensitive photos, videos or private information on their phones need to be especially vigilant about device security.
Experts recommend checking an app’s developer, ratings, reviews and requested permissions before installing it. Unnecessary permissions should be disabled whenever possible.
