Xiaomi has introduced its new Dragonscale EV battery, developed in collaboration with CALB and Sunwoda, with a major lifetime guarantee aimed at improving electric vehicle safety.
Under the guarantee, if a Dragonscale battery catches fire due to a manufacturing defect, Xiaomi will provide the owner with a new SUV from the same Skynomad series and trim. The replacement will be provided without factoring in the vehicle’s depreciation or mileage.
The guarantee also covers fires resulting from collisions. In such cases, Xiaomi will pay the difference between the insurance payout and the vehicle’s market value immediately before the incident.
However, the offer comes with certain conditions. It applies only to vehicles used privately by their first owner and excludes rideshare vehicles, rentals and used cars. Owners must also maintain an active Xiaomi connected-services subscription and have their vehicles serviced through Xiaomi-authorized service centers.
Xiaomi is not the first Chinese automaker to introduce an extensive battery safety guarantee. Chery previously launched its Rhino Battery Safety Program, which includes lifetime coverage for the battery, motor and control unit, along with a replacement vehicle if thermal runaway destroys the car. Buick has also offered a similar replacement promise, although its coverage is more limited.
The new guarantees come as China introduces stricter battery safety requirements under the GB 38031-2025 standard, commonly referred to as the “no fire, no explosion” rule. The regulation requires battery packs to withstand thermal runaway for two hours without catching fire or allowing smoke to enter the passenger cabin.
The new standard also includes underbody impact testing and safeguards against battery damage during fast charging.
Xiaomi says its Dragonscale battery goes beyond these requirements, featuring high-voltage isolation that activates within milliseconds and a cloud-connected battery management system that continuously monitors battery-cell data. The connected-services subscription is therefore required for the system to remain active.
The Dragonscale battery is set to launch on September 7 with the Skynomad N90 and N70. The models will feature a 76 kWh battery and are expected to offer an extended driving range.
It remains unclear whether the Dragonscale battery will eventually be introduced in Xiaomi’s SU7 or YU7 models. With Xiaomi also preparing for expansion into Europe, its lifetime fire guarantee could attract significant attention in international EV markets.
