Cameras to replace counting systems on traffic signals

Cameras replace traffic counting system

Lahore has decided to operate traffic signals under the Vehicle Movement Control System (WMCS) to modernize the city’s traffic management.

Under the new system, the existing countdown timers at traffic signals have been removed. Advanced cameras will now determine which direction the signal should open or close based on real-time traffic flow.

To facilitate pedestrian movement, command-based Pelican signals are being installed as part of the automated system. The Traffic Engineering and Planning Agency (TEPA) has begun a phased upgrade of traffic signals across the city.

According to officials, after Mall Road’s Faisal Chowk, a Pelican signal has been installed at Adda Plot on Raiwind Road. Modern cameras have also been installed to integrate signals with the WMCS. These cameras can automatically analyze traffic flow and block traffic from three directions when required.

The new automated system will also enable better control of VVIP movements, minimizing inconvenience to the public. According to the DG LDA, approval has been granted to install modern signals and camera systems at 20 locations in the city.

The Chief Engineer of TEPA said the advanced signals will eliminate the outdated and complex traffic system and the entire network will be operated from a central control room.

Additionally, speed table breakers are being constructed at U-turns to help prevent accidents.

Officials added that the modern signal and camera system will also assist in identifying traffic congestion points and finding effective solutions.
