Chicken shortage could occur soon: poultry industry warns

Web desk: The poultry industry has warned that a chicken shortage may occur in the coming months due to heavy taxes on producers.

Asif Gondal, General Secretary of Broiler Farms, said the industry is facing a serious crisis.

He said taxes on chicken and related products have reached around 65 per cent.

Adding, he said, maintaining supply is already difficult during shortages.

He warned that higher taxes could make chicken almost unavailable in the market within two months.

Asif Gondal said the cost of a chick is less than Rs20, but producers pay about Rs10 in tax per chick.

He said these taxes have pushed the poultry industry to the brink.

He urged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take notice of the situation. He warned that the crisis could be worse than previous shortages.

Chicken prices hit record high

Chicken prices continue to rise and have reached a new record high.

The increase has added pressure on consumers who are already facing financial difficulties.

After a rise of Rs7 per kilogram, the price has reached Rs591 per kg, the highest level so far.

Premium quality broiler meat is now selling at Rs 700 per kg. This has made chicken unaffordable for many.

Market sources said the live broiler chick price is Rs 380 per kg. Wholesale rates have increased to Rs 394 per kg.

Egg prices are also high. Eggs are selling at Rs 331 per dozen. And the price of a crate has increased to Rs 9,810.
