Pakistani citizens can now update their marital status on their Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) online through the NADRA Pak-ID mobile app or the official Pak-ID web portal.
The online facility allows applicants to update their marital status without necessarily requiring a new CNIC card to be printed, as marital status is considered an unprintable field. However, applicants who also want to replace their father’s name with their husband’s name on the card will need to apply for a full CNIC modification.
Required Documents and Fee
Applicants must provide supporting documents according to their marital status:
- Married: Computerised Nikah Nama or Marriage Registration Certificate
- Divorced: Divorce Certificate or relevant legal document
- Widowed: Death Certificate of the spouse
The standard fee for an unprintable-field modification is Rs. 100, while online applications are generally processed within 7 to 10 working days.
How to Change Marital Status on CNIC Online
Applicants can follow these steps through the Pak-ID mobile app or web portal:
1. Create or Log in to Your Pak-ID Account
Download the Pak-ID app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or access the online portal.
Register a new account or log in using your existing credentials. Applicants must complete the required mobile number and email verification through OTP.
2. Start a CNIC Modification Application
After logging in:
- Select “Apply for CNIC Modification”
- Choose the “Identity Card” option
- Select “Executive” as the processing priority for the online modification
3. Select Marital Status
On the modification fields page, tap the “+” icon to add a field for modification.
Select “Marital Status” from the list of unprintable fields and choose the applicable status:
- Married
- Divorced
- Widowed
Applicants may also be required to provide relevant spouse information, including the spouse’s CNIC number.
4. Upload Supporting Documents and Complete Biometrics
Upload a clear copy or photograph of the relevant official document, such as the marriage registration certificate, divorce certificate or spouse’s death certificate.
Applicants must also complete the required biometric verification, including fingerprints and facial verification, through the Pak-ID application.
5. Pay the Fee and Submit
Pay the applicable processing fee online using an available credit card, debit card or supported mobile wallet.
Before submitting, carefully review all information and uploaded documents. Once everything is correct, submit the application for processing.
Important Note for Married Women
If a married woman wants to change her father’s name to her husband’s name on the front of the CNIC, simply updating the marital status is not sufficient.
In this case, she must select the full CNIC modification option so that the relevant information printed on the card can also be changed.
