With Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day just days away, preparations have gathered momentum across the country as markets, roads and commercial areas turn green and white ahead of August 14.
Temporary roadside stalls have been set up across different parts of the cities, displaying national flags, buntings, badges, caps, wristbands, green-and-white clothing and other patriotic accessories. Families, children and young people are increasingly visiting the stalls to purchase decorations for their homes, shops, offices and vehicles.
National flags remain among the most sought-after items. Prices vary considerably depending on size, fabric and quality.
Smaller and medium-sized cloth flags range from around Rs500 to Rs1,200, while large flags can cost up to Rs2,000. Badges are among the more affordable items, generally costing around Rs50.
Decorative buntings are also in high demand as people prepare to decorate streets, balconies, shops and homes. Depending on quantity and quality, bunting packs are available for roughly Rs400 to Rs1,300, while green-and-white balloon packs and hanging decorations can cost between Rs150 and Rs450.
Patriotic clothing is particularly popular among children. Green-and-white Independence Day T-shirts are currently available in the wider Pakistani market for around Rs500 to Rs1,500, depending on fabric, size and printing quality. Caps are available from around Rs300, while more elaborate flag-themed dresses and complete children’s outfits can cost considerably more.
As Independence Day approaches, the shopping rush is expected to increase further, particularly during evening hours.
In Islamabad, the government buildings have been adorned with colourful lightings and huge flags to mark the day.
The festive atmosphere is also visible along Mall Road in Lahore, which has been decorated with colourful electric lights and green-and-white illuminations.
Crescent-and-star motifs glowing along the road have added to the celebrations, attracting the attention of residents and visitors.
