The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the qualification system for cricket at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, confirming the sport’s return to the Olympic Games after a gap of 128 years.
According to the ICC, six teams each will compete in both the men’s and women’s events, with all matches set to be played in the T20 format.
For the women’s competition, teams from Australia, India, Great Britain, and South Africa have already secured qualification. Additional spots will be allocated to the top-ranked teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.
The ICC also stated that qualification for the men’s event will be based on the T20 rankings as of December 31, 2026, while the remaining places will be decided through ICC Olympic qualifiers scheduled for 2027.
It further clarified that the host nation, the United States, will only qualify for the men’s or women’s tournament if their team is ranked within the top 15 of the T20 rankings. The West Indies will not qualify directly, and representation from the Caribbean will also be determined through the qualification process.
Each team will name a 15-member squad, and a total of 28 matches will be played across the men’s and women’s tournaments. The cricket event at the Los Angeles Olympics will be contested in the T20 format.
